The Meeting Point
for Permit Enthusiasts

A place in the Sian Ka’an Reserve, Quintana Roo, Mexico, where a different experience awaits you.

Catch Memories That
Last a Lifetime

You will meet with passionate fishermen like yourself, to renew the challenge of being face to face with a permit and share knowledge, theories, stories and dreams.

We know that for all of us the culminating moment is when we see the permit eat our fly, we also know that we enjoy the whole process to reach that moment.
Some tasks are almost rituals, the set up of equipment, imagining the situations that we will face according to where we are and the environmental conditions, choosing our outfit to be comfortable and adapted.
It is essential that everything that happens around us does not take away our energy or concentration, we want to sleep and eat well, feel well cared for and, perhaps most importantly, meet other fishermen who share our passion and with whom we can exchange theories and previous experiences.

This is our vision and we want you to join us to create that place, we will provide the infrastructure and the service, and among all of us we will put joy to build our meeting point.

PERMIT

We want everything to be simple, because the complexity is provided by the permit.

We all like to fish alone, to strengthen the relationship and communication with the guide on duty, because we can put 100% of our concentration on observation, search and preparation, and also, let’s admit it, because it is difficult to share the Few opportunities that usually present themselves.
For these reasons we suggest that you come with that intention, sleep alone and relaxed, fish alone and focused, thinking about socializing before and after the fishing day.

We also know that there are times when you want to be with a friend for the whole day, so we allow you to bring a guest who will share the room and boat with you, for a very reasonable extra fee.

    PRE TRIP
    GENERAL INFORMATION

    Requirements to enter Mexico

    What are we wearing?
It is likely that they have the necessary experience and know what they need for this trip, we tell them what we do so that they compare and analyze if they should change something.

    Equipment

9wt and 10wt rods, the latter for the use of heavy flies, which are often necessary.
Lines that balance the chosen rods, we avoid overloading them because it is very common to make shots of more than 60 or 70 feet, which is unusual in other destinations.
We use leaders longer than 10ft. 12ft or longer is typical, we want the fly line away from our fly, many times we find the fish very nervous.
Each of us uses the tippet that gives you safety and confidence, most of the spots are free of rocks and coral, some of us use 12lbs, others 16lbs.

    Flies

We use the classic shrimp and crab imitations, emphasizing having a wide variety of weights and sizes, we will find many situations very different from each other, which will require continuous adjustments in the choice.
We will make the patterns we trust the most available to you and tell you when and how we use them.

    Clothing and footwear

There are as many wading situations as there are bow fishing situations, we must be prepared and comfortable for both.
Some wear long pants, others wear shorts, with or without leggings.
The bottom in which we will walk is not dangerous, it can be sand or mud, with some stones, we believe that hard flats wading boots may exceed the needs, for comfort, to be able to put them on and take them off quickly, we use nautical shoes without laces.
Do not forget the waterproof jacket, not only for rainy days, it is very necessary for travel on windy days.
For everything that needs protection from the wind and salt water we use ziplock bags, always useful.

  • The Cancun International Airport is the place of entry and meeting to start the experience.

  • We need your flight to arrive between 11am and 2pm, to ensure a smooth arrival at the lodge.

  • We will pick you up at the airport with a suitable vehicle and in approximately 2 hours we will arrive at the Sian Ka’an Reserve, from there we will go by Panga to Punta Allen.

  • The boat ride down the inner lagoon will take approximately one hour and you will see a good deal of the flora and fauna found in the the unspoiled Yucatan as well as prime permit habitat!

  • Upon arrival in Punta Allen we will have a short trip by vehicle to the Lodge.

    A DAY WITH US

The day begins with breakfast, between 6:30 a.m. and 7:00 a.m., that schedule will give us time if adjustments need to be made before heading out to fish. The guides will be with us at 7:45 am and at 8:00 am. we should all be on the boats to start the fishing day !

The break for lunch is flexible and will be organized with your guide, depending on the conditions at the time and your wishes.

At the close of the fishing day, between 4pm and 4:30pm, we will wait for you with a refreshing towel and cold drink. Please join Johnny and Lu on the Lodge deck and share your days fishing experiences with your fellow anglers. The information we share can be essential for planning the next day and, recent memories always allow us to better describe the details and emotions of the day
    .
At 7:00 p.m. please join us for dinner, Johnny and Lu will be your hosts and will be receptive to any suggestion or query.

Our time together at breakfast, the end-of-day meeting and dinner will open up the possibility for us to deepen the discussion of topics that interest us, design strategies for the next day, compare techniques, choice of flies, draw parallels with other times or places and, perhaps, one of the most important points, generate relationships that enrich us in all aspects.

    FISHING SITUATIONS

Ascension Bay is a very extensive and varied fishery!
The areas that are chosen for our attempts are defined by many variables, one of them and a very important one is the weather, the intensity and direction of the wind often limits the areas to visit, others are the temperature of the water, the tide and knowing which ones to visit. They have been the most productive places in recent days.
These variables also define what type of encounters are most likely, we can find them in all possible ways, nervous water, floating fish showing the dorsal fin and tail, on rays, making mud, flashing, tailing in shallow water, swimming free and “laid up”.

Inside the bay we find the lowest average depth; it is common to be able to get out of the boat and pursue our objective in waters between 2 and 4 feet deep.
When we fished the outer zone, we find deeper areas closer to the mouth of the bay and shallower areas fishing closer to shore.

We can find singles, doubles, small schools or very large schools, the guides know and can tell us which are the most frequent patterns in each spot.
The infinite variety of situations presents us with a great challenge: choosing a strategy for each of them, in terms of approach, choosing the correct fly to “work” according to what we need, presentation and, of course, the action, which seldom occurs as we imagine or plan.

    EXIT

The days have passed in a cordial, intense and challenging atmosphere. Each day brought us different emotions and allowed us to learn from our own experiences, from the guides and from possible new friends or adventure companions, who have generously shared their accumulated wisdom.

According to the schedule of your return flights, we recommend that they be between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., in order to have an orderly and timely transfer, we will take you to the airport with the same transportation as used on arrival.

We will help you with your luggage and we will carefully monitor of all the details.
If everything happened as we hoped, it is likely that you are already beginning to miss us, know that you are welcome and it will be our desire that you join our community of serious permit anglers, although some call us addicts.
